SMServer

SMS and Paging Software

Microbe Engineering Stuttgart (Germany) is offering a new product, which allows the combined access of private paging systems, long range pagers and the SMS of various cellular service providers across a company LAN or WAN. The combination of these pathways provides a hitherto unknown flexibility in one-way communication. Since paging is done by name, the sender does not have to know or to worry whether his addressee is today wearing a cell phone or a pager, as long as the central database has been updated, the message will reach its destination.

Because the services can be accessed from any workstation on the LAN and even through internet or dial-up from outside, not only is the workload of the operator reduced but the use of small messages becomes feasible in areas where it has not been used so far. The messages can be ca. 160 characters long (this is the limitation of the SMS specification but also of most alphanumeric pagers), which allows for quite a bit of text, e.g. the taking of simple orders or in a hospital environment.

One-way communication is used whenever either a response is not necessary or not possible at this time, like in a request to which the answer first has to be found, or when an instruction is given which has to be obeyed immediately and without questioning, as is the case in many security applications. In these areas paging has its place and will not be replaced by two-way communications, but rather re-gain its foothold.

To allow for this, the unmatched flexibility of Microbe's MicroPage system offers the ideal solution. Messages can be produced through a Local Area Network, both from a workstation by an operator but also automatically from a device like a UPS, a temperature sensor, an alarm or access control system and via e-mail. In the same way, messages can be sent to a short- or long-range pager, a cellular phone, and a fax or e-mail.

The operating features include:

Windows-driven user interface

device-independent selection of pagers by owner name

scheduled messages (you can send yourself reminders of appointments)

repeated messages (in case recipients are out of range)

memos attached to pagers ('I will be away till 16:00')

messages to mixed groups of pagers and cell phones

reports on messages by sender and by recipient

With the combination of all these features, SMServer is the most complete solution for one-way communication in the market.

So far, the response has been very successful!
